Coronavirus Disease

Is the COVID-19 more severe than the flu?
COVID-19 causes more severe disease than seasonal influenza.

People usually have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus, and this means no one has immunity to that particular virus. Therefore, more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease.

Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.

What are the symptoms of the coronavirus disease?
The most common symptoms in human are fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. Besides that, in more severe cases infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and even death. Symptoms would appear in between 2-14 days.

Are masks effective against the coronavirus disease?
If you are someone that has strong immune system and healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection. Please wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing. This action will help to minimise the spread of the virus, just in case if you are already infected with the virus . Masks are effective if you practise frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. On top of that,  you must also know how to dispose the mask properly.

Is there a vaccine for the coronavirus disease?
Coronavirus disease is a new disease, and when a disease is new, there is no vaccine until one is developed. It can take few years for a new vaccine to be developed.

How does the coronavirus disease spread?
The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose. Always remember, that prevention is better than cures. Please clean your hands frequently with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Can coronavirus disease spread by touching a surface?
People could catch COVID-19 by touching any contaminated surfaces or objects – and then touching their eyes, nose or mouth. Be careful, and please do not simply touch here and there. Please wash your hnd with soap frequently.

Is the coronavirus disease new?
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been previously identified in humans.

Is headache a symptom of the coronavirus disease?
The virus can cause a range of symptoms, from ranging from mild illness to pneumonia. Symptoms of the disease are fever, cough, sore throat and headaches.

Can the coronavirus disease spread through air?
Airborne spread has not been reported for COVID-19 and it is not believed to be a major driver of transmission based on available evidence.

What is the recovery time for the coronavirus disease?
Using available preliminary data, the median time from onset to clinical recovery for mild cases is approximately 2 weeks or 14 days and is 3-6 weeks for patients with severe cases.

How long does the coronavirus last on surfaces?
It is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces, but it seems to behave like other coronaviruses. Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days.

There’s currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

You can protect yourself and help prevent spreading the virus to others if you:
Do
Wash your hands frequently for 20 seconds, with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub
Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze. You also can wear mask.

Stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if you are not feeling well
Don't
Touch your eyes, nose, or mouth unless after you have washed your hand with soap and water
